Useful things. Beautiful materials. A little unexpected.

I created Serein Home from a love of natural materials and the quiet warmth they bring into everyday spaces.

I’m drawn to the grain of wood, the texture of woven rattan, and the lightness of bamboo. I love that these materials are never completely uniform. Small differences in color, shape, and texture give each piece its own character.

For me, the most meaningful objects are not simply displayed. They are held, used, noticed, and slowly made part of daily life.

How I Choose Each Piece

I don’t choose something because it photographs well. I ask three things.

Does it feel right in the hand? The grain, the weight, the way an edge is finished — you can tell within a second of picking something up.

Will it actually get used? I try to place it in a real room. A spoon rest beside the stove. A tray that holds the post by the door. If I can’t picture where it lives, it doesn’t come in.

Is there something unexpected in it? A shape or a solution I hadn’t seen before — not novelty, but the small surprise of an object that solves something you didn’t know was a problem.

Two Kinds of Finds

Most of what I carry — the olive wood, the acacia, the walnut boards — sits in a U.S. warehouse and reaches you in about a week.

The rest comes from China, and it is the part of the shop I am most curious about. A tea tray with a slatted top, because gongfu brewing pours the first rinse away. A rolling pin with no handles and no bearings, made for dumpling skins. A dipper cut from a single dried gourd. These are forms that are ordinary in China and unfamiliar almost everywhere else, and they never needed redesigning. They ship straight from China, so they take two to three weeks — and I say so on the product page, because a surprise at the mailbox is not the kind of unexpected I’m after. What I Won’t Tell You

I’m not going to say these objects will save the planet, or describe a workshop I have never visited. I know what I know: what the material is, what the measurements are, where the parcel ships from, and how long it takes. If something isn’t on the page, it’s because I couldn’t stand behind it.

In the end, I’m usually looking for the same thing: something natural, useful, and quietly beautiful.
