Two parts: a slatted bamboo top, and a shallow tray underneath that catches whatever runs off. In gongfu brewing the first rinse gets poured away and the cups get warmed and emptied, so a tray that can take spilled water is not a nicety - it is the thing that makes the whole method possible on a table you care about.

It is small on purpose. There is room for one pot and two cups, which is the size most tea actually gets drunk at. To empty it you lift the top off and pour the base out.

Care

Empty the base after each session rather than leaving water standing in it. Wipe both parts with a damp cloth and let them dry fully apart, not stacked. No dishwasher and no soaking - bamboo is a laminate of strips, and prolonged water gets between them.

Questions

How much water does the base hold?
Enough for the rinses and drips of a normal session, not enough to be a sink. Empty it when you are done.

Will it stain from dark tea?
Over time, yes, unevenly and mostly around the slats. Bamboo takes on tea the way a teapot does.

Is it big enough for a full tea set?
No. One pot, two cups. A six-cup set needs a tray roughly twice this size.

Does the top come off?
Yes. It lifts straight out, which is how you empty and clean it.
