A gourd, dried and cut in half lengthwise, so the narrow end becomes the handle and the round end becomes the bowl. It is one piece of a plant. Nothing was joined to anything.

At 87 grams it is lighter than almost anything else that holds this much water, which is the practical argument for it: full, it still weighs less than an empty ceramic jug. It floats, so it does not sink to the bottom of a bucket, and the shell is naturally waterproof without any coating.

Care

Rinse it and hang it up to dry rather than leaving it sitting in water. Dried gourd is durable but it is still a shell - it will crack if it dries out completely in direct sun, and it will soften if it never dries at all. Somewhere shaded and airy is right. Not for the dishwasher.

Questions

Is it real gourd or a moulded copy?
Real gourd, dried and cut. Nothing here is moulded. Each one is a slightly different shape and size, and the grain inside the bowl is different every time - which is the plainest way to tell a real shell from a cast one.

How much water does it hold?
[Not specified] by volume. The bowl is about 11.8 cm across and 6.2 cm deep at the deepest point.

Can I use it for hot water?
Warm, yes - it is used for washing hair and rinsing in the bath. Not boiling.

Is it food safe?
[Not specified]. It is sold as a water dipper for washing, bathing and watering plants, and we would keep it to that.

What is the red cord for?
Hanging it up. It is knotted through the handle end and can be cut off if you would rather it were not there.
